Aberdare Ranges is an awe-inspiring landscape. Our love for adventure leads us to one of the best places to visit in Murang’a County for outdoor adventures. It’s a hiking trail at the edge of the Murang’a border with Kiambu County.
The journey starts from Nairobi with a scenic drive through the Kenyan country side. It takes about two hours from Nairobi to Kimakia forest starting point.
The trail starts at Kimakia fishing camp and follows a fisherman’s trail down to Chania river. We cross over and start climbing up towards the Ragia river. After about an hour or so of hiking through the Nature’s beauty, including views from both sides, we reach our destination, Kimakia Falls.
It is impossible not to be amazed by how much water falls. Thrashing over the rocks with majesty on this mountain side. In fact, you could say that no other place in Africa, has anything even close, but before I go any further with my story, why don’t you reserve a sit and experience it yourself?Â

Located at the border between Murang’a and Kiambu counties, on the southern edges of Aberdares Forest reserve is Kimakia Forest. This hike starts at their KFS office and traverses along wide-open forest roads before we turn into the forest itself. The hike down the forest can be slippery and long but very scenic. Next comes the river crossing and river trek before finally we’re at the double tier waterfall – our main objective for the hike
The return journey from the waterfalls is exactly the same way we came until finally, we return to the KFS office, completing a 15 km trek. This hike has amazing scenery, thrills, change of environment, river crossings and best of all – 2 amazing waterfalls in series where you can swim and relax
There’s a lot to expect on this incredible hiking trail:

Nestled within the picturesque Aberdare Ranges lies a hidden gem – the Kimakia Waterfall Hike. My recent expedition to this natural wonder left me rejuvenated and enchanted.
The hike itself was a delight for the senses. Surrounded by lush greenery and serenaded by the melodious songs of birds, every step was a journey into tranquility. The trail, though slightly challenging in parts, rewarded us with breathtaking vistas at every turn. As we neared the waterfall, the sound of cascading water grew louder, heightening our anticipation. And when we finally laid eyes on the majestic Kimakia Waterfall, it was a moment of pure awe. The sight of the water plunging into the pool below was nothing short of mesmerizing, a testament to the unspoiled beauty of nature.
But the adventure didn’t end there. After the hike, we ventured into the charming town of Gatura, where we were pleasantly surprised by the vibrant nightlife. From cozy cafes to lively bars, Gatura offered a plethora of options to unwind and mingle with the locals. The atmosphere was infectious, filled with laughter and camaraderie. Whether sipping on cocktails or indulging in local delicacies, every moment spent in Gatura was filled with warmth and hospitality.
In conclusion, the Kimakia Waterfall Hike and the vibrant nightlife of Gatura provided the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. It’s a destination that caters to both nature enthusiasts and those seeking a taste of local culture. I would highly recommend adding this experience to your bucket list.
